About xTempore

The Truman State University Forensics Union is pleased to introduce xTempore – a new resource for middle school and high school students, teachers, tournament directors, and coaches interested in, teaching with, or competing in Extemporaneous Speaking.

Why “xTempore”?

We derive the word “extemporaneous” from the Latin “ex tempore,” meaning “out of time.” This site is both about preparing people to compete in extemporaneous speaking and creating “timeless” artifacts of knowledge and skill that any student or teacher can use for years to come.

Our Plan

We plan to roll-out this site in stages.

  • Beginning in January 2026 we will introduce weekly (USX, IX, and economic) questions for practice and for tournament use.
  • Over the course of spring 2026 we will gradually introduce “backgrounders” on various topics.
  • Over summer 2026 we will prepare video content to support competitors and teachers as they enter the 2026-2027 season.
  • Beginning in August 2026 we will introduce significantly more in-depth content, including discussion podcasts breaking-down analysis on topics and “explainer videos” on key concepts, international regions, and burning issues.

Where possible, we plan to host guest speakers from among the Truman faculty and outside guests who can provide supporting commentary on current topics. We do not plan to track national standings, competitive statistics, or commentary on student performance.

Our Commitment to Content Neutrality

Extemporaneous speaking often discusses political topics, but this site aims to be apolitical. Our goal is to write topics that do not presume a “right” or “wrong” answer and do not communicate judgment about the issues under discussion. Every effort is made to avoid topics that would put students in an uncomfortable position when advocating one side or another. We also commit to making at least half of the questions we write “open-ended” (meaning they do not call for a strict “yes” or “no” answer).  Where certain views are articulated by guests or panelists on a blog or video, these views are not the position of Truman State University or Truman Forensics. Sources and videos linked to this site are responsible for their own content and links do not constitute an endorsement of certain views.
